Gas is gradually returning to Welham Green homes today thanks to engineers who worked through the night.

National Grid staff completed purging the system of air overnight, enabling them to start reconnecting homes today.

One villager, Julie Flaherty of North Mymms, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times her gas had retuned just before 2pm.

A National Grid spokesman said: “Given the large number of properties involved this will take time as each property must be visited.

“Our first priority is to restore supplies to vulnerable customers.

“We’re grateful to the local community for their continued understanding and would like to reassure them that we’re doing all we can to get their gas back on as soon as possible.”
