Work is underway on Hatfield's long term sewage flooding problem, Thames Water has promised.

After several gardens were flooded with foul water from manhole covers in Travellers Lane, the company revealed its engineers were at work on an underground pipe.

A spokesman said: “To resolve the problems in Travellers Lane we’re currently replacing a 6-metre stretch of sewer pipe which had become damaged by tree roots growing into it and a number of blockages.

“This will allow waste water to flow freely through the pipes once again instead of flooding out into the street. We hope to be finished by the end of this week.”

“The damaged pipe was detected when we used CCTV to inspect its condition following the problems last month. Once we knew it was damaged an emergency job was raised to repair/replace it, which is what’s being done at the moment.”

The area has been plagued by periodic sewage flooding for about two years.
