ARMED robbers who targeted a security van in Watford made a quick getaway to Welham Green - before abandoning their car.

Now police are appealing for anyone who saw the hammer-wielding duo fleeing from their BMW in the village, or the robbery itself, to come forward.

The raid took place outside in the car park outside Costco on Hartspring Lane, Watford.

A Group 4 security guard left the store with a cashbox and was walking towards his van when he was approached from behind by one of the robbers.

He threatened the guard with a claw hammer and demanded the cashbox. The guard threw it on to the flood and ran back into the shop.

The robber then grabbed the box, and got into a dark blue BMW convertible 3 series, which was being driven by his accomplice.

They sped off down the A41, pulling into a lay-by and throwing the emptied cashbox out of the window.

Their getaway car was later found abandoned in Pooleys Lane, Welham Green.

The robbery took place at 12.45pm on Friday.

Pc Laura Chillingworth, said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the car with two men in Pooleys Lane or around Welham Green the week of the robbery.

"We are also appealing for witnesses to the robbery to come forward. There were many people in the area at the time the incident occurred who may have seen the offenders and the incident take place."
