Police are warning motorists to slow down, as officers will be extra vigilant for speeding drivers this week.

As part of a Europe-wide crackdown that caught thousands of drivers in its first phase in April, officers will be using both marked and unmarked cars to patrol Hertfordshire’s roads.

Inspector Mark Rogers said: “I would urge anyone to drive within the lawful speed limits.

“However, I would like to point out that it is not always appropriate to drive at the speed limit depending on the road conditions. The limit is not a target.”

Police say speed is a factor in a third of fatal accidents, which caused 3.064 deaths or serious injuries across Europe in 2013.
