Pranksters have been tampering with benches in Welwyn Garden City.
Residents are urged to take extra care after several benches being tampered with in the Handside area.
At least four benches have had the nuts at the back loosened, making them unstable with the potential to cause an accident.
Director of Finance and Operations at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council Pam Kettle said: “We’re asking residents for the time being to check the bench is stable before they sit down.
“Those responsible might think this is a mindless prank, but it has the potential to cause some serious harm – especially as these benches are mainly used by older and vulnerable people.
“If anyone has information, or if residents see any suspicious behaviour in the coming weeks, we urge them to report it to the police.”
Residents can report any suspicious activity by calling the police non-emergency number, 101.
In an emergency or if you witness a crime in progress dial 999. Benches that have been tampered with can be reported to the council on 01707 357000.
