Over 30 children, parents and teachers helped start work on a Welwyn Garden City school’s new library.

Harwood Hill JMI and Nursery School’s volunteers helped move a shed and dig over 100 wheelbarrows worth of soil to get the ball rolling on the project earlier this month.

Alison Hockley, chair of the Friends of Harwood Hill (FOHH), said: “We wanted to create somewhere that will inspire the children’s love of books, with more space, as well as outdoor reading areas.”

The PTA has already raised £20k, but to minimise costs, volunteers have done as much as they can themselves.

“It’s so exciting to see the build finally happening,” Alison added. “Particularly after everyone’s hard work. The Harwood Hill community is amazing – so many people have come together to get us this far.”

The school is hoping to fundraise at a summer event on Saturday, July 14, between 12pm and 4pm, which is open to the public.

It will include live music, a licenced bar, street food, fairground rides and much more.
