WITH the guillotine hanging precariously over Times Territory's post offices, the last thing anyone could imagine would be another office opening up.

However, that is what is proposed in Tewin.

Members of The Tewin Stores Association have applied to the Post Office for a small 'combi' counter at the village shop, which is run by 34 volunteers.

Eleanor Lohr, who is the secretary of the association which helped re-open the shop in February, told the WHT that they believed if a post office did come to Tewin, then it shouldn't struggle.

"We lost our post office here about a year ago and since then everyone has missed it, it was very popular.

"The thing is that our store is for the community, it has been re-opened by the local people; when we were going through the stages of re-opening, we were promised a post office.

"If it does go ahead, we are not dependant on the money made, because we are all volunteers here.

"The person who runs the office however will be paid, but it is only 17-hours-per week."

Eleanor added that one person had successfully applied for the position and that they were waiting to hear from the Post Office to find out if Tewin Stores was deemed an appropriate site.

A Post Office spokeswoman said: "We are looking to restore services in the village store in Tewin.

"This was a temporary closure and there are no current proposals to close this office under the network change programme. We are looking to open the office as soon as possible."

The future of all post office branches in the county is expected to be revealed, and a public consultation begin, on July 8.
