The scene at Howardsgate, WGC

A “HERO” Pcso was hospitalised after challenging a suspect in WGC today.

He fell to the ground in pursuit of a man who fled from near the John Lewis store.

Police and ambulance crews raced to the scene, in Howardsgate, at 2.30pm today (Thursday).

Eyewitnesses saw the Pcso confront the man and ask him to empty his pockets. The man then threw the officer to the floor.

Oaklands College student, 18-year-old Amo Brami, told the WHT: “He [the Pcso] was running after a shoplifter.

“He is a hero he should be promoted.”

A 17-year-old, who did not wish to be named, said: “I saw someone from John Lewis with two Pcsos coming down the road.

“They approached a black man saying they had caught him on CCTV stealing from the store.

“They asked him to empty his pockets and when an officer went to search him, the man grabbed him, pushed him over and then ran off.”

Howardsgate was closed to traffic during the incident.

The Pcso has been taken to the QE2 Hospital.

A man and a woman have been arrested.
