Brian Byrne, 58, was last seen at his home address on May 7, but was seen on camera filling up his Vauxhall Combo van at the Tesco petrol station in Oldings Corner, Hatfield, at around 7am on the same day.

His van was later found in Nazeing, Essex, on May 13.

Following the discovery of his van, an “extensive search” of the Lea Valley Park area was carried out, involving around 50 officers and 150 volunteers from across the country, from as far afield as Northern Ireland.

The Ulster assisters carried out water-based searches using specialist sonar equipment.

Inspector Chris Hunt, who is coordinating the search, thanked volunteers and said: “The sonar equipment in particular has proved vital, as it can do in a matter of hours what it would take our officers weeks to do.”

Mr Byrne is described as white, around 6ft 5in tall, of stocky build, with balding grey hair.

It is now believed that he may have been wearing a blue t-shirt, beige trousers and a brown jacket, as pictured in the CCTV.
