A Welwyn Garden City recruitment consultant has raised nearly £2,000 with a sponsored run to help a seriously ill friend move into a new flat.

Victoria Ruebotham, 28, raised £1,805 by running five kilometres through Knebworth Park for
31-year-old Chaz Monaghan, whose parents run The Wrestlers pub in Hatfield.

Chaz, a former head chef brought up in Welwyn Garden City, was struck with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in Australia last year, and has been living in his brother’s flat in Stevenage since October.

Although he is due soon to move to a Welwyn Garden City council flat in Bridge Road, he has no money to furnish it, as his savings have been spent on treatment and accommodation.

Chaz told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “I am massively grateful.

“My brother has sold his flat now, so if I couldn’t move into Bridge Court, I would be homeless.

“I am still waiting for my disability benefit, so I have no money at all.”

He plans to spend the cash on a carpet, furniture, a fridge-freezer, and a washing machine.

Victoria, whose run was part of an event organised by the British Heart Foundation, said: “Chaz has a lot of friends, but he really needs some support.

“Although he was not feeling at all well, he was there at the finishing line.

“I just want him to get well.”
