TWO industrial vacuum cleaners contaminated with deadly asbestos have been stolen in Welwyn.

And police are warning the public not to go anywhere near them.

The two yellow Numatic vacuum cleaners were taken from commercial premises undergoing demolition on the old Godfrey Davis Ford garage site on London Road/Welwyn Bypass.

The raid took place overnight on Monday.

A police spokeswoman said: "The vacuum cleaners look like domestic machines and we are concerned they could be offered for sale via markets, car boot sales or other means.

"If the public see these machines anywhere they should not touch them.

"The contents of the machine could pose a serious risk to health if inhaled.

"Asbestos dust is extremely dangerous and the machines should not be approached by anyone who is not wearing very specific protective clothing.

One machine has the reference number H2D572 with an identity mark B2705.

The other has the reference number H2D570 with the identity mark B1712.

If you have information call police immediately on 999.
