UNCERTAINTY is sweeping through post offices in and around the town with branch managers welcoming the Potters Bar Edition campaign.

Alam Mahbub, manager of Little Heath Sub Post Office in Church Road, Potters Bar,claimed that the "worrying" threat of closure would mostly affect the elderly.

He said: "We do not know what to do as everything is out of our hands. They say we will not know until August but we should know before then.

"I don't think local people realise the importance of the branch and the elderly will be hit hardest.

"It is about a mile away to the nearest other post office.

"People can start petitions but they just need to show they need us by using our branch

"All we can do is to wait at the moment but we just want to know."

Mohammed Ashraf, owner of Brookmans Park post office in Bradmore Green, agreed that it would be "very stressful" for regular costumers to travel to another branch if they were to close.

"We do not think it will be us but we can not be sure," he said.

"I think it is the old people that will suffer the greatest as they are the ones without the transport as we are part of the community.

"If we shut, most of our customers would have to go to Hatfield which is a very long, stressful journey.

"People are worried and all we can tell them is that we will let them know as soon as possible.

"There is no doubt that they will be closing the full quota.

"Someone is going to be affected and I think that decisions have already been made."

He added: "All we can do is put a brave face on.
