A MULTIPLE car pile-up has led to firefighters to free a person trapped inside their vehicle on the A1(M).

All three lanes of the motorway between junctions six, Welwyn, and seven, Stevenage, going northbound are blocked.

The southbound carriageway is also down to one lane.

Gary Sanderson, spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service, is at the scene of the accident, which happened at about 5.45pm tonight (Monday).

He said it is causing chaos across the roads.

"It's absolute carnage on the A1(M), I would advise all drivers to avoid it altogether.

"It's a multiple car crash spreading across the motorway."

More soon.
