ELEVEN drivers were caught with unfit and illegal cars after a police operation in Hatfield.

On Wednesday 24 cars, vans and heavy good vehicles were targeted in Operation Mermaid at the weighbridge in Comet Way.

Offences recorded included not having the correct safety equipment to carry dangerous goods, overweight vehicles and faulty lighting.

Vehicle Operating Standards Agency, Trading Standards and the Department for Work and Pensions, worked with the police to ensure vehicles were not posing a risk to other road users.

Inspector Paul Campbell said: "By working with our partners on operations like this, we can help to keep law-abiding motorists safe.

"Hopefully we can send a clear message to those risking their safety, and that of others, that unsafe and illegal vehicles won't be tolerated in Hertfordshire."
