THE Vice Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire has been appointed on to a university governing body.

Richard Beazley will join the University of Hertfordshire as an independent member of the board of governors from January 1, 2013.

He will also replace Jo Connell as chairman of the board when she steps down on August 31 next year.

As the Hatfield uni’s governing body, the board is responsible for determining its educational character and mission, as well as its strategic direction.

He also spent 10 years as chairman of the East and North Herts NHS Trust, retiring in March this year.

He was appointed Vice Lord Lieutenant in 2010, is a member of the University Court and of the Advisory Council for the Hertfordshire Community Foundation, and vice-chairman of the Florence Nightingale Foundation.

Professor Quintin McKellar, vice chancellor, said he was delighted with the appointment.

He added: “Jo Connell has made an outstanding contribution to the university and I am confident Richard will build on the excellent work she has achieved during her tenure.”

Mrs Connell said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my 12 years on the board of governors, with six of those years as chairman, and have no doubt Richard will be an excellent successor, bringing his wealth of knowledge and experience to the role.”
