RESEARCH at the University of Hertfordshire has been described as 'internationally excellent'.

Praise for the Hatfield-based university came in the Government's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) on Wednesday.

RAE is conducted every seven years by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to assess the quality of research in universities across the UK.

History, nursing and midwifery, engineering, English language and literature, business and management studies, art and design, physics, psychology, computer science and informatics were all given top ratings.

They were graded as 'world-leading', 'internationally excellent' and 'internationally recognised' by the judging panel of RAE.

John Senior, pro vice-chancellor (research) at the university said: "We are delighted with the results.

"It demonstrates the quality and innovation within the university's research environment and the knowledge of the researchers themselves."

The university's 'world-leading' rated research projects include one of the most successful history assignments, the Old Bailey online website

This documents some of the most notorious criminal trials in British history from 1674 to 1913.
