HATFIELD has become one of the first towns in the country to receive a new, superfast internet service.

Virgin Media’s new ultrafast 100Mb broadband has gone on sale for the first time, with Hatfield and four other areas being the first to receive the service.

The company says it will be 20 times faster than the national average connection, allowing users to download entire music albums in five seconds, a TV show in 30 seconds, a movie in one and a half minutes and a high definition film in seven minutes.

The service will cost between 35 and $45 a month.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media said: “The launch of our 100Mb service in Hatfield is a significant milestone in the UK’s broadband evolution and a vivid illustration of the power of our next generation network.”
