Two horses died and several were injured after 15 of the animals escaped and stampeded near South Mimms.

They escaped from a field near Junction 23 of the M25 at 9.30pm last night, causing the motorway to close in both directions. The A1 southbound was also shut.

A police spokeswoman said three horses collided with cars, but all 15 were eventually recovered. Nobody was injured during the incident.

The M25 reopened an hour later and the A1 southbound was opened at 11.50pm.
