Young adults with learning disabilities have a chance to discover the world of boxing in Welwyn Garden City without risking their health or safety.

Kerry Kane of Codicote, who has been offering activities for local learning disabled clients for about a year, started her “non-contact boxing” classes last month.

The traditional form of the sport would not be sensible for her clients for medical reasons, but with the help of Welwyn Garden City Boxing Club, Kerry can offer a gentler, non-competitive version.

Under the supervision of an experienced coach, people between 16 and 25 can enjoy hitting boxing bags, shadow boxing, skipping, and other physically demanding exercises.

Kerry said: “I think it is a really good thing for them to do. It is all about having fun and keeping fit, and they learn about healthy eating. It is also a good way to meet people and make friends.

“It is going really well.”

The Thursday evening classes, which last an hour and cost £5, currently have six regular members, but she has room at the club’s fully equipped premises in Homestead Lane for more.
