Troubled Codicote care home told it still needs to improve

A troubled Codicote care home has been told a lack of effective management has prevented it making the necessary improvements, according to a Care Quality Commission (CQC) report.

The unannounced inspection at Heath Lodge on January 31 this year followed two previous assessments that found several breaches, and had resulted in the service being placed in special measures.

Inspectors noted in the latest report – published earlier this month – that although some improvements had been made, there were still several areas of concern at the Danesbury Park Road home.

For all five key areas: safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness and leadership, it was graded ‘requires improvement’.

“People did not always receive high quality care that was well-led,” inspectors said.

“The action plan submitted to us following our previous inspection had not been completed and issues identified following local authority reviews of the care had also not been completed.

“Care records and records relating to the management of the service were incomplete.

“Staff felt the manager involved them in discussions about the running of the home. However, people felt the manager was not always visible.”

The care home provides accommodation and personal care for 67 elderly people, some of whom have dementia, and at the time of the inspection 34 people were living there.

Inspectors added: “The provider had not ensured there was effective, well-trained and supported leadership on each of the floors of the home.

“Care staff had not all had the training required, and staff had not received regular supervision of their conduct or practise.”

However, inspectors also noted that staff interacted with people in a kind and friendly manner, and none lacked a caring approach.

They also reported people did not experience delays while waiting for care, personal care plans had been developed to include more up-to-date information, and people were happy with food and drink provided.

Regular meetings also took place to discuss service improvements and developments.

“At our previous inspection we found recruitment checks were not thorough or comprehensive,” inspectors wrote.

“We found improvements had been made at this inspection and found that robust recruitment and selection processes had been implemented.”
