TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-loved family doctor, who has died aged 80.

David Almond, who worked at Parkfield Medical Centre in Potters Bar for almost 40 years, died on January 25 after battling cancer.

At his funeral on Friday, friends, family and former patients filled Christ Church in Little Heath, to pay their respects to the Cuffley-based GP.

Dr Almond’s wife Judy said: “The church was packed to overflowing and the family have been overwhelmed by the number of cards, letters and tributes they have received; a testimony to one of the last traditional family doctors.

“He was a musician of some note, playing the oboe in quintets to symphony orchestras. His many other interests included trekking in the more remote parts of the world, and on retirement he joined the Open University and gained another degree.”

Dr Almond joined Parkfield Medical Centre in 1958, shortly after marrying Judy.

In his 38 years at The Walk centre, he delivered around 500 babies at their homes, before retiring in 1996.

Former colleague Dr Caroline Dain said: “David combined a huge generosity of spirit and respect for all with a deeply intellectual understanding of both the science and the art of medicine.”

A book of remembrance has been opened at the surgery. Donations made in Dr Almond’s memory have so far raised 4,267 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
