Polish man Piotr Caban, who was killed in a hit-and-run last week, was a member of Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club.
Valerie Newton, of Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club, said: “We as a club are in shock at the news about Piotr Caban.
“He became a member of the club last year after joining our Summer Evening Sailing Sessions.
“He and his wife Sylwia (currently about to give birth in Poland) attended our Annual Dinner on October 21.
“Piotr was a lovely family man with a beautiful wife, 22-year-old daughter Ewa, and a baby on the way.”
Police are still appealing for information after Piotr, a pedestrian, was involved in a collision with a car on Wednesday evening.
He died in hospital on Thursday after being found with severe head injuries in Tewin Road at the junction of Mundells, at around 7.50pm.
Mr Caban, who lived and worked in Welwyn Garden City, was initially taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge by ambulance in a critical condition.
