A CLUSTER of decaying poplar trees are being felled in Hatfield today (Friday).
The 11 mature Lombardy poplar trees are on the rim of the sunken roundabout at the junction of Queensway, St Albans Road East, Wellfield Road and French Horn Lane.
Four of the trees were found to have extensive decay, with a weakness in a fifth.
Welwyn Hatfield Council will be planting new saplings to replace the trees.
Councillor Mandy Perkins, executive member for planning, said: “We felt that all the trees now have a very limited life span and are fast becoming dangerous in a very high risk position in the town, and therefore we have had no option but to take this action.”
Cllr Perkins added that the work had to be carried out at short notice because consent to fell the trees arrived at the last minute.
