After the opening of its Welwyn Garden City site, the hotel chain is eyeing Potters Bar for further expansion.

Travelodge aims to almost double its presence in Hertfordshire, with sites in Radlett, Rickmansworth, Stevenage, Watford, Hitchin/Letchworth, and Hoddesdon/Broxbourne also in the pipeline.

The plans, totalling a £50million investment, will bring the budget hotel chain’s total in the county to 17.

A site for Potters Bar hasn’t been identified yet, but Travelodge is prepared to spend around £7million on either refitting an existing building or building a new hotel from scratch.

The company estimates it will create about 15 to 20 new jobs.

Nnaemeka Eza, manager of the Welwyn Garden City hotel, started his career at Travelodge as a receptionist to become a manager today.

He said: “Our new hotel has got off to a flying start.

“This is great news for the local economy, as research shows that our customers will spend £2million with local businesses during their stay.”

Travelodge spokeswoman Shakila Ahmed said: “This hotel opening marks our intention for further expansion across Hertfordshire as there is a desperate consumer need for more low cost and good quality accommodation across the region.”

She added that the county-wide expansion would create approximately 200 new jobs in total.
