Welwyn Hatfield Council is “monitoring the situation” after travellers moved onto land under the Digswell Viaduct.

A council spokeswoman said: “We received reports that an unauthorised encampment had moved under the Digswell Viaduct over the New Year bank holiday weekend.

“An officer visited the site yesterday (Tuesday) and confirmed the presence of five caravans, two transits and one vehicle.

“The land is not council owned and we have contacted Network Rail, given their position near the railway arches, so that they can take the appropriate action.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and advise any residents that have concerns to get in touch.”
