ONE more travellers pitch has been added to the number for the borough, according to new plans.

But the move from the previous 17 pitches to 18 in Hertsmere will not require any more sites to be found to cater for them, according to borough councillors.

The East of England Regional Assembly agreed to the plans for 176 new pitches by 2011 for gypsies and travellers in Hertfordshire two weeks ago.

Now they need to be approved by central government by 2009 to go through.

Hertsmere borough councillor Hannah David, portfolio holder for planning, said: "Originally the figure proposed for Hertsmere was 17 additional pitches and, although EERA are now recommending 18, this is only one more pitch.

"It will not require any more sites to be found than 17 pitches would."

She added: "We have already provided six additional pitches through the expansion of existing sites so we will now look at providing 12 more.

"This is about the size of one more site somewhere in the borough."

The six have been allocated to the Pylons site in Barnet Road, Potters Bar.

The remainder could go to one of the 21 sites across the borough which were earmarked in an independent report, including eight in Potters Bar and South Mimms.

Cllr David said she felt the hundreds who made the voice heard at the public consultation last summer had shaped the number.

She believes the number is relatively low in comparison to other areas in the county, but could have been higher if people had not spoken out.

The public meetings last year run by the council really conveyed the message that, if a solution was not reached, a greater number could be imposed upon the borough, she added.
