Travellers have pitched up at a private site in Welwyn Garden City.

Police received a report of an unauthorised encampment of caravans and a number of vehicles at 9.22pm on Tuesday, June 5, on the site of the old gasometers on Tewin Road.

The land belongs to National Grid, which has started legal proceedings against the group, who police believe are from the traveller community.

Welwyn Hatfield Council, which sent officers to the site yesterday and contacted the landowners, said: “The land is in private ownership and it is their responsibility to take the appropriate action.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation closely.”

Police officers are liaising between the landowners and the caravan owners.
