A DRAMATIC rescue operation was launched to save a bird that got its leg trapped in a branch 70ft from the floor.

A red kite was found hanging from its leg from the branch after getting caught on some fabric, in Watton-at-Stone.

After a failed attempt by the fire service to save the bird, RSPCA animal collection officer (ACO) Katie Wright realised a tree surgeon was needed.

They were lucky enough to find help in Simon Pridmore, of A1 Tree Specialist, in Hitchin.

Mr Pridmore climbed the tree and cut down the branch that the bird was hanging from, rather than trying to disentangle it.

He then lowered the bird and branch down to ACO Wright, who cut the material away.

ACO Wright said: “Mr Pridmore was absolutely amazing. He generously gave his time and expertise to rescue the red kite who without him might not have been saved.

“Just before egg laying, red kites decorate their nests with materials including rags and it may be that the youngster got entangled in one of these rags.”

Following the trauma the bird was exhausted and had a swollen leg.

It was taken to Bedfordshire Wildlife Rescue, in Houghton Regis, for treatment.
