A prominent Welwyn Garden City councillor has called for trains to run on Boxing Day to help football fans and shoppers.
Lib Dem county and borough councillor Malcom Cowan said: “It is high time there are Boxing Day services. In most of Europe, they have trains on Boxing Day, but we stand aloof, pushing more traffic onto the roads.”
Roger Perkins, spokesman for train operator Govia Great Northern, responded: “Boxing Day, like Christmas Day, is one of only two days in the year when services do not run and this is because most people are with their families celebrating Christmas so passenger numbers would be very low.
“These two days also give Network Rail the opportunity to carry out vital engineering work.”
See next week’s Welwyn Hatfield Times for more of the company’s response.
