Govia Thameslink has dismissed a request from Potters Bar’s MP to extend its rail compensation scheme to non-season ticket holders.

Currently residents who travel from Welwyn Hatfield and Potters Bar daily without buying season tickets are ineligible, meaning they will receive no additional compensation for the rail chaos since May.

Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden said: “The thousands of passengers who either buy tickets every day, make use of Carnet tickets or use contactless cards have had to put up with the exact same level of disruption over the past two months as those who have purchased season tickets.

“It is not fair that they are forced to claim for only a very small amount of compensation for delayed or cancelled trains where season ticket holders will receive the additional compensation on top of this.”

Responding to Mr Dowden’s request, a Govia Thameslink spokesman said: “The additional industry compensation scheme, which GTR is administering on behalf of the industry, has been offered to customers in agreement with the Department for Transport.”
