Michael McGrath, an internationally recognised motivational and business speaker, addressed Datchworth Women’s Institute yesterday to mark its 90th birthday.

Shirley Ashby, branch secretary, said: “Michael opened his talk by telling the audience a little about his early life and how, at the age of 18, everything changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.

“He has made history by being the first disabled person to lead expeditions to both the North and South Poles, where he faced temperatures of minus 40 degrees.”

His adventures inspired him to found the Hertfordshire-based charity Muscle Help Foundation, which funds exciting experiences for young people with his condition.

Shirley continued: “Michael ended his talk with some short film clips of young people who had achieved their dream, and also the proud moment when he achieved his own dream of reaching the poles.

“Michael’s credo – ‘As much as I can’ - is truly an inspiration for all disabled people.”
