A Conservative Hatfield town councillor has decided to sit as an independent, fracturing the ruling group’s grip on the authority.

Councillor Caron Juggins, who represents Hatfield East, told deputy clerk Paul Widdecombe on Friday she has relinquished her Tory affiliation.

Her move gives Labour, which lost control of the authority in July when Councillor Mike Alder defected to the Tories, a chance to regain control.

With the parties tied on seven elected members each, control of the council will be decided at an emergency meeting on November 25.
