Herts Fire and Rescue Service has welcomed 20 new trainee firefighters to its ranks.

Among the new faces is Tom Golder, 24, of Hatfield.

Tom was previously a motor vehicle technician.

His hobbies include keeping fit, boxing and cycling.

Tom used to race cars in the classic VW Cup and drove a MK3 Golf GTI.

His favourite part of the firefighting training course was the breathing apparatus (BA) module and the live fire exercise in the gas rig.

His most memorable part of the course was cutting up brand new Nissans during training for road traffic collisions.

Tom will be posted to Blue Watch Hemel Hempstead.

Another new recruit is Mark Golding, 27, of Potters Bar.

Mark was previously a fitness instructor.

His hobbies include power lifting, keeping fit, watching sports, films and spending time with his family and friends.

Tom is the East Midlands Power Lifting Champion 2017.

His favourite part of the course was also the BA module and live fire behaviour course.

Tom will be posted to Green Watch Watford.

Welwyn Garden City fire station will be welcoming a new recruit who hails from Harpenden.

James Thornton, 26, has previously worked at St Albans Cathedral and for a gym clothing company.

His hobbies include playing football, rugby and going to the gym.

James used to dig graves.

His favourite part of the course was BA and live fire training.

James will be posted to Red Watch Welwyn Garden City.

Chief fire officer Darryl Keen formally welcomed 20 trainee firefighters into their roles following 15 weeks of intensive training, watched by proud family and friends.

Darryl said: “I would like to congratulate all the new recruits and welcome them to their new roles.

“They stand at the beginning of a unique career which offers them an exceptional range of opportunities and experiences.

“They have worked extremely hard to achieve the high standards we expect from our firefighters and complete this challenging course.

“They will now play a key role in their stations across the county to help keep the people of Hertfordshire safe.”

• Lee Addington, 30, from Stotfold, who will be posted to Blue Watch Stevenage

• Simon Baker, 28, from Tring, who will be posted to White Watch Hemel Hempstead

• Ryan Breeze, 24, from Wheathampstead, who will be posted to Green Watch Hemel Hempstead

• Craig Clark, 24, from Borehamwood, who will be posted to White Watch Watford

• Ayman Elswaf, 23, from Cheshunt, who will be posted to Red Watch Watford

• Tom Golder, 24, from Hatfield, who will be posted to Blue Watch Hemel Hempstead

• Mark Golding, 27, from Potters Bar, who will be posted to Green Watch Watford

• Ben Halcomb, 27 from Watford, who will be posted to Blue Watch Watford

• Joseph Heard, 24, from Much Hadham, who will be posted to White Watch Hemel Hempstead

• Charlie Holton, 22 from Cheshunt, who will be posted to Red Watch Stevenage

• Ewan McGill, 20, from Shefford, who will be posted to Green Watch Stevenage

• Andrew Parr, 30, from Baldock, who will be posted to Green Watch Stevenage

• Emma Plunkett, 26, from Brickett Wood, who will be posted to Green Watch Hemel Hempstead

• Josh Rex-Barnes, 26, from Luton, who will be posted to Blue Watch Hemel Hempstead
