Time to tidy up graves in Hatfield

Relatives have been advised to tidy up ornaments on graves in Hatfield in time for maintenance work.
Hatfield’s Lawn Cemetery has headstones laid upon rows of concrete plinths.
In a letter to residents, Welwyn Hatfield Council’s Cemetery Services department has stated: “We welcome memorial items and flowers at the cemetery, placed on the concrete plinths at the head of the grave.
“When items are placed on the grass throughout the year, we cannot access and fully maintain the plots. The items are also at risk of damage as we complete grounds work around the memorials and graves.
“So the cemetery can be fully restored to the intended lawn design, we are writing to ask you to place all remembrance and tribute items on plinths, or take them home for safe keeping by Monday, October 17. With the grave areas clear, we will be able to top the entire ground with soil and sow it with grass.
“We understand many of these items will hold deep emotional significance, and any that cannot be moved by this date will be boxed and placed on the plinths for collection.”
