A RECORD amount of money was raised from the Potters Bar Rotary Club's Christmas sleigh.

More than £7,400 was made over the 11 nights and four mornings collecting around the town's streets and outside Tesco.

The money, £800 more than the previous year, will go to the Rotary Club charities to benefit the local community.

Santa made headlines in the Potters Bar Edition when it was announced he would be replaced in the sleigh by a cuddly polar bear, sparking health and safety rumours.

This didn't seem to have much of an effect as those lucky enough to have heard the Christmas bells ringing out and spied Santa walking the streets gave generously.

Rotarian John Godfrey said: "I would like to thank everyone for the fantastic support for the club.

"The reaction from the public was far more enthusiastic as Santa was interacting more with children.

"I think we should have got Santa walking along the streets years ago.
