Hatfield’s market manager is keen to see a third market day established in the town following on from the success of festive trade.

Hatfield currently has market days on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but market manager Alan Brown believes the Christmas Friday markets have proved that a third day of trading would be welcomed.

He told the WHT: “The Christmas market was on four Fridays in December and was a success.

“I grabbed some guys from another market and gave them some space.

“It’s hard to get traders these days, but Hatfield is quite a successful market compared with others in the area.

“From the success of the markets in the run up to Christmas, I can’t see any issue with it not working.

“I would have to do a fair amount of work to get traders in and you want traders to stay, you want them to be regular.”

Since the market moved from Market Square to its current location in Town Centre, Mr Brown said it had been a “massive success”.

He added: “Having a market creates a great atmosphere in the town.

“We have a good relationship with the shopkeepers.

“People like to socialise. Shoppers know all the traders by their first names.

“Most traders come from London or the other side of London. A lot of them have got an hour plus journey to get to Hatfield.” Food stalls are also finding success in Hatfield with a Thai stall proving popular and a new wrap stall adding to the mix.

Mr Brown said: “We’re looking to get the right balance and we’re open to anyone who wants to sell anything.”

The nearest Friday markets to Hatfield are in Hoddesdon and Hitchin, but Mr Brown does not think Hatfield would be in direct competition with them.

Another boost to the Hatfield markets will be the addition of electricity, which Welwyn Hatfield Council had been aiming to have installed in December.

A council spokesman said: “We’ve installed half of the electrical sockets for the market along White Lion House.

“A legal issue has delayed the installation of the rest along another canopy, which is not under council ownership.

“In the meantime, we’re visiting the market on Wednesday [today, 11 January 11] to explain how to use the new sockets safely.

“We’re pleased the Friday market was a success in December and would be supportive of this continuing in 2017.”
