Zara Hamilton, 28, took the Great Ormond Street Hospital box from the reception area at the Premier Inn, in Comet Way.

She was caught on CCTV taking the collection jar at around 10.15pm on Friday, September 20.

Hamilton, of Chelwood Avenue, had scanned the reception area for staff before helping herself to the loot.

A police spokeswoman told the Welwyn Hatfield Times it is estimated there was around £70 in the box.

Magistrates at St Albans Magistrates Court jailed Hamilton for eight weeks after she pleaded guilty to theft on September 28.

The court heard she had been released from a previous jail term shortly before the theft, and had a previous record for similar crimes.

A spokeswoman from Premier Inn welcomed the verdict.

She told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “This is incredibly disappointing behaviour which fortunately does not regularly happen in our premises.

“We feel the appropriate action has been taken.”
