THE first edition of The Welwyn Times has been found in two Hertfordshire libraries.

You may have read in last week’s WHT that we were on the hunt for that special first copy, after realising it was missing from our files.

Well the hunt is over – of sorts – as the first edition can be found at both Hertfordshire Archives, in Hertford, and WGC Library.

Susan Hall, pictured, of Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies, the specialist centre for the discovery of Hertfordshire’s history from 1060 to the present day, uncovered the organ, which shows the week’s news of Thursday September 13, 1928.

The WGC born-and-bred resident, who is compiling a selection of interesting stories from the paper down the decades, said: “I found it while picking my way through the stories down the years.

“It says ‘incorporating Welwyn News and the Welwyn Garden City and Hertfordshire Post’ but other than that it isn’t too much else story wise of interest; it’s a shame it wasn’t a more interesting front page really!”

Mrs Hall, of Maple Grove, added: “A lot of people come here to read the old papers, so we decided to pick a few of the best stories out and compile them as well as having hard copies of the original papers.”

The other first edition sits at WGC Library at Campus West – however, as neither belong to us we are still keen to get our hands on our own copy.
