CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a Tesco Express store in Potters Bar were last night (Thursday) deferred amid vehicle access concerns.

Hertsmere Borough Council's Potters Bar and Shenley planning committee raised fears there was not enough room for emergency and delivery vehicles at the proposed site on Cranborne Parade, Mutton Lane.

A council spokeswoman said: "More information is needed about vehicular access as there is not enough room at the moment and we need to see how that can be managed."

This is the second time concerns have been raised about Tesco's planning application. The first, in autumn 2007, was when the council turned down the supermarket giant's first application amid parking concerns.

It is not yet known when the application will be reconsidered.

Tesco is proposing to occupy three vacant units on the parade - a total of 448 sq m - to include provision for a dental practice and another retail unit.
