A WELWYN Garden City man who stole a taxi payment meter has been spared jail.

Shab Uddin, 32, admitted taking the device on August 12 this year.

He also stole a Tom Tom sat nav, belonging to Mohammed Hussain, in Hatfield.

Last week magistrates at St Albans Magistrates Court gave Uddin, of Burycroft, a 12 week prison sentence, suspended for a year.

He was also ordered to pay £670 in compensation, and £80 in costs.
