A PROFESSIONAL footballer from Potters Bar is set to make his debut for Switzerland against England tonight (Tuesday).

Full back Scott Sutter, who plies his trade for Young Boys, is part of the Schweizer Nati squad which will take on Fabio Capello’s men in their latest European Championship qualifier in Basle.

Sutter, 24, was born in Enfield and raised in Potters Bar and began his football career in England, before moving to Switzerland at the age of 16.

The former Chancellor’s School student, whose father is Swiss, had spells at Millwall, Charlton and Aston Villa before signing for Grasshoppers Zurich.

He then joined Young Boys, who play in the Swiss capital Berne, last summer.

A boyhood Tottenham fan, Sutter forced his way into the English public’s football conscience when he played for the Swiss runners-up against Spurs in the Champions League third qualifying round last month.

Speaking before today’s match, Sutter said: “On our day, Switzerland can beat anyone and that’s what we’ve got to remember when we play England. “We can really give them a game.”

He did, however, admit that it would be peculiar to make his debut against the country of his birth.

“It’s strange it has fallen like this if I play but I’m really looking forward to the whole occasion,” he said.

He added: “My mates actually don’t give me too much stick at all, they’re just really happy for me and really supportive.

“That might change a bit if Switzerland beat England though!”
