A suspected thief spat in a supermarket worker’s face after being confronted in Welwyn Garden City.

The assault happened in Cole Green Lane’s Co-op at around 8.10pm on Saturday, August 26, following which officers today released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to.

A police spokeswoman said: “During the incident, a man was challenged by a member of staff about a possible shoplifting offence. The man then spat in the face of the member of staff before making off.”

The spokeswoman added: “Police would like to speak to the man pictured as he may have witnessed what happened or may have information that can assist the investigation.”

She asked anyone who recognises him or has any other information to contact PCSO Luke Smith via the Hertfordshire Constabulary non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference B1/17/3490 or report information online at
