A SCOUTING stalwart was honoured with a surprise party in celebration of 50 years’ service.

North Mymms Scout Group threw a surprise barbecue to celebrate the “remarkable achievement” of its group leader, Ian ‘Lem’ Lewington, who has notched up 50 continuous years in scouting.

Lem joined the group as a cub in 1962 and has been a scout, a venture scout, a young leader, a scout leader and is now group leader.

A crowd of 250 well-wishers included parents who had been scouts under Lem and whose children in turn had been scouts at North Mymms.

Alan Perkins, an explorer scout leader, gave a speech recounting some of Lem’s adventures and misadventures in scouts.

MP Grant Shapps presented Lem with a specially engraved tankard to mark his 50 years.

John Fraser, who helped organise the barbecue, told the WHT: “The celebration ended in the traditional scout manner.

“As night fell and the younger members of the crowd left, a fire was lit and the old scouts and leaders gathered round to retell stories of past camps over a beer.”
