SAFELY through to the second round of the Champions League, fifth in the Premier League, with a first away win over arch-rivals Arsenal in 17 years.

It’s safe to say that Tottenham Hotspur are currently enjoying one of the best seasons in recent memory.

But despite the achievements of the current Spurs squad, there is one side in the club’s history that outweighs all others in terms of success.

In 1961, Tottenham became the first team of the modern era to achieve the “double” – winning both the league championship and the FA Cup in the same season.

So it wasn’t surprising to see a throng of Tottenham fans descend upon Maher the Bookseller in WGC this week, when Cliff Jones and Terry Dyson – two of the players starred in that momentous season – visited the Howard Centre book store to sign copies of 61: The Spurs Double, a new tome featuring previously-unseen behind-the-scenes photographs, newspaper cuttings and match programmes.

And first in line, as always, was the Welwyn Hatfield Times’ competition winner – June Beard, from WGC, who took her brother Adam Steppings.

“It was very good,” said June. “I was five when they won the double so I don’t really remember it, but I’ve been a Spurs fan all my life because of my Dad.

“I told Cliff my Dad would’ve been quite proud to have met them.”

Tony Maher, owner of Maher the Bookseller, said: “They [Terry and Cliff] were lovely.

“They had a great crowd and were here for over two hours, which was very impressive.”
