Spate of cycle thefts in Hatfield

A SPATE of bike thefts took place in Hatfield in the last week.
An £800 bike, which was used in a charity cycle from London to Paris, was stolen in a raid which is being blamed on the cost-saving streetlight switch-off.
Susan Taylor’s custom-built bike was taken from her private alleyway at the side of her home in Old Hatfield.
The Park Street resident said: “It’s frightening to go outside and scary to think what can be happening now that the streetlights are off.”
The theft happened during the early hours of Tuesday, September 6.
On Saturday, John Elvy, of Parkhouse Court, left his bike at Hatfield railway station and returned the next day to find it had been stripped of everything not locked up.
He said: “Thieves had stripped my blue Scott Voltage YZ2 bike of everything they could get off of it, including the wheels, rear gears and saddle, along with accessories such as the rear light and mudguard attached to the saddle pole.”
And a Dolan DH Cyclesport road/racing bike with 18 speeds (pictured) was swiped from outside a block of flats in Walsingham Close at 9.45pm on Monday last week.
