SIX people escaped a blazing house fire in Welwyn Hatfield in dramatic fashion.
Just after 11pm on Wednesday, firefighters were called to a home in Mill Green Lane that had gone up in flames.
Six people were in the house at the time the fire broke out, but one man on the ground floor managed to escape.
Three people jumped from a first floor window onto a van parked below, while two others escaped by jumping onto wheelie bins.
One of the occupants was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire broke out in the living room, and fire crews from Hatfield and WGC spent two and a half hours at the scene, but the house was destroyed.
A firefighter from Hatfield said it is believed the first man out of the house drove the van under the window to allow the others to escape.
“It was quite a large fire, and there were six people in the building at the time,” he said.
“One got out on the ground floor, but five people were trapped upstairs.
“He thought very quickly and drove his van up to the front of the house so they could jump onto his roof.”
A neighbour who saw the episode unfold said: “It was pretty dramatic. I’ve certainly never seen anything like this before.
“You see this sort of thing on TV but it never happens to you.
“The police, ambulance and fire service were excellent and all responded really quickly. I’m just really happy no one got hurt.”
A spokeswoman for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue said an investigation into the blaze was ongoing, but the cause is currently believed to be accidental.
