A REVIVED push to get the A1(M) widened is to be made by Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps.

The shadow housing minister has written to transport secretary Ruth Kelly asking for a meeting to discuss the "much needed widening".

He said: "There are two key things that have changed to push the A1(M) widening in our favour, since we last tried.

"One is the loss of the major services at the QE2. The second is the imminent increase of population, in both Welwyn Hatfield and Stevenage."

"I would be very disappointed if Ruth Kelly did not want to have a meeting with me; the results of it should be very interesting though.

"The project would take years if it goes through.

"We are looking into ways of widening the motorway without knocking down any homes at all, which would be absolutely great.

"Also I would make sure that if the motorway was extended, then we would get two vital things, road quietening asphalt and sound prevention barriers.
