A READING challenge is under way to encourage adult literacy.

Hertfordshire libraries are asking people to read six books between now and May as part of National Year of Reading.

As part of the National Six Book Challenge, readers are encouraged to complete a reading diary.

Librarians will help participants choose their books and will be offering free gifts and DVD loans as readers work through the challenge.

Councillor Keith Emsall said: "While reading six books may seem a bit daunting for those who are lacking in confidence in their literacy skills, we're sure that the emphasis on enjoyment and challenge and support will help emergent readers to surprise themselves at what they can achieve between now and May."
