THE A1(M) is still closed and likely to affect the evening rush hour.

Following this morning's fatal road traffic accident work has continued throughout the day to clear the road.

Traffic continues to be diverted off the motorway at junction six Welwyn northbound with vehicles taken through Knebworth.

A police spokesman said: "The Highways Agency has indicated to Hertfordshire Constabulary that the recovery of the vehicles from the northbound carriageway of the motorway should be completed by 3pm.

"Once this has taken place the road will need to made safe and this is expected to take a further two hours.

"Therefore the carriageway won't be opened until early evening.

"Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys where possible and take alternative routes or use the diversion via Knebworth that is in place.

"Hertfordshire Constabulary would like to reiterate their thanks to motorist for their patience and co-operation at this time.
