Police have closed a road in Hertfordshire after a lorry was fly-tipped.

Officers are urging motorists to avoid Elstree Road in Bushey this evening due to road closures being made to allow for the recovery of an abandoned lorry trailer.

Police were called to reports of the fly-tipped vehicle underneath the bridge of the M1, near to the roundabout junction with the A41, at around 9.15pm on Tuesday, October 11.

The articulated lorry trailer was found to have large amounts of rubble inside and therefore poses a risk to passing motorists.

Officers have made the decision to close both carriageways until Hertfordshire County Council’s highways department and Hertsmere Borough Council arrange the safe removal of the trailer and its contents as soon as possible.

Detective Inspector Kio Bozorgi, of Hertsmere’s Intervention Team, said: “We appreciate the inconvenience this has caused, but the safety of motorists is paramount.

“If the road closure is needed over the weekend, I would ask those attending the British Masters Golf Tournament to use alternative routes to The Grove.”

Any enquiries regarding the removal of the trailer should be directed to Herts County Council’s Highways line on 0300 123 4047.
